A new chapter for 3x3 in the Netherlands
The Dutch Basketball Federation (NBB) organizes official 3x3 tournaments across the country every year. From regional qualifiers to the national championship, each tournament requires tight organization, and referee scheduling is an essential part of that.
Starting this season, the NBB uses RefManager as its official platform for scheduling and managing referees at 3x3 tournaments. This means all referee assignments, communication, and day-of operations run through a single centralized system.
Why a dedicated 3x3 platform
3x3 tournaments place unique demands on referee scheduling. A typical tournament involves over a hundred games in a single day, spread across multiple courts and categories. Referees must be assigned based on their level, experience, and availability — all under time pressure.
That calls for a solution built specifically for this challenge. Not generic scheduling software, but a system that understands how 3x3 tournaments work: fast rounds, rotating courts, tier-based assignment, and the need to make quick adjustments on game day.
RefManager offers exactly that. The platform is built from the ground up for referee scheduling in basketball, with specific functionality for 3x3 tournament formats.
What this means for referees
For referees active at NBB 3x3 tournaments, a lot changes for the better. Instead of receiving schedules via email or WhatsApp, they get their assignments directly in the system. They can see exactly when their next game is, on which court, and how much rest they have.
When changes happen on game day — and they always do — referees are notified immediately. No searching through group chats or waiting for verbal instructions. The schedule is always current and always accessible.
The system also contributes to fair distribution. The algorithm accounts for the number of games per referee, rest periods, and matching experience to game difficulty. That means more balance and better games.
What this means for tournament organizers
Tournament coordinators organizing events on behalf of the NBB get a powerful tool. The preparation that used to take hours — assigning referees, building schedules, resolving conflicts — is reduced to a fraction of that time.
On game day, RefManager provides real-time oversight: which round is running, who is available, where are the bottlenecks? If a referee drops out, the system immediately suggests alternatives. The coordinator stays in control, even when the plan changes.
This is not a replacement for the expertise of experienced coordinators. It is an amplification. The knowledge stays with the people — the system takes over the calculations and communication.
A platform built for basketball
RefManager is not a generic scheduling app that happens to work for basketball. The platform is specifically developed for referee scheduling in basketball, by people who know the sport. The 3x3 module is built around the way tournament coordinators and referees actually work.
The partnership with the NBB is a validation of that approach. When the national federation chooses a specialized platform, it signals that the sport is ready to professionalize processes that have been manual for too long.
We are proud of this partnership and look forward to a season where referee scheduling is no longer a headache, but a well-oiled process.
